  • Jennifer was born on July 24, 1969, in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx. Her father, David, was a computer technician. Her mother, Guadalupe, taught kindergarten. Jennifer is the middle of three daughters. Her elder sister, Leslie, is a housewife who sings opera. Her younger sister, Lynda, is a DJ on New York's WKTU, a VH1 VJ, and a morning news show correspondent on New York's Channel 11. Jennifer's parents were born in Puerto Rico, but did not meet until both came to America. Her mother's parents were Europeans who settled in Puerto Rico. She says that it was her parents' work ethic that made a difference in her life. Jennifer took singing and dancing lessons from age 5. She attended 12 years of Catholic school, including an all-girl high school. She played softball and tennis in high school and was a gymnast.
  • After high school, she briefly worked in a law office. During this time, she continued dance classes at night. At 18, she left home because her mother was scared by her decision to pursue show business. With casting on "In Living Color" (1990) in 1990, she moved to L.A., but initially hated it. Finally her boy friend, David Cruz, moved to be with her there and she learned to accept her new environment. Her career took off from her "Living Color" stint and reached new peaks with her portrayal of slain Latino singer Selena (1997) in 1997.
  • Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born in the Castle Hill section of the South Bronx on July 24, 1969. The middle of three musically inclined sisters, Leslie, a homemaker and Lynda, an entertainment consultant for New York's Channel 11, Jennifer always dreamed of being a multi-tasking superstar. Jennifer's parents Guadalupe Rodriguez and David Lopez were both born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the second largest Puerto Rican city. The two were then brought to the United States in their childhoods, and eventually met while living in New York City. While Jennifer is of Puerto Rican descent her paternal grandmother's parents were Europeans who settled on the island of Puerto Rico.
  • As a child Jennifer enjoyed a variety of musical genres, mainly Afro-Caribbean rhythms like salsa, merengue and bachata, and mainstream music like Pop, Hip hop and R&B. Although she loved music, the film industry also intrigued her. Her biggest influence was the Rita Moreno musical West Side Story (1961). At age five, Jennifer began taking singing and dancing lessons. Aside from being a budding entertainer, Jennifer was also a Catholic schoolgirl, attending eight years at an all-girls catholic high school named Holy Family, located in the Bronx, before graduating from Preston High School after a four- year stay. At school, Jennifer was an amazing athlete and participated in track and field and tennis. At age eighteen Lopez moved out of her parent's home.
  • During this time Lopez worked at a law firm while she took dancing jobs at night. Her big break came when she was offered a job as a fly girl on Fox's hit comedy "In Living Color" (1990). After a two-year stay at "In Living Color" (1990) where actress Rosie Perez served as choreographer, Lopez than went on to dance for famed singer-actress Janet Jackson. Her first major film was Gregory Nava's My Family (1995) and her career went into over-drive when she portrayed slain Tejana singer Selena Quintanilla Perez in 1997's Selena (1997).

  • Personal Quotes
  • "I thought she'd offer me some sympathy. Instead, she said, 'Don't you ever call me crying again! You wanted to be in this business, so you better toughen up!' And I did." - to Redbook magazine August 1999, on the lesson in tough love she got from her mother.
  • "You laugh it off, you get upset for a little while, you're human and you let it go." - on the "outrageous" tabloid stories she hears about herself, at a press conference to discuss her movie, The Cell (2000) in August 2000
  • "This film certainly is not meant for the girls who sing along with my songs" (about The Cell (2000))
  • I was always a singer and a dancer, and I always wanted to be an actress. For me, it's all just one thing.
  • "Nail Polish" (upon being asked what she got on her SAT's)
  • "When I'm not prepared, which is almost never." -when asked if she ever feels insecure
  • I don't really check out other people's butts.
  • I'm not mad about my ankles - they're too skinny.
  • We've all had a love of our life and failed love affairs. I'm just the biggest romantic - it's really sad. I tell people that, but nobody listens.
  • I've always had a huge fear of dying or becoming ill. The thing I'm most afraid of, though, is being alone, which I think a lot of performers fear. It's why we seek the limelight - so we're not alone, were adored. Were loved, so people want to be around us. The fear of being alone drives my life.
  • In every movie they want you to look as thin as you can look. In Selena, it was the other way around: "How can we shoot her butt so it looks like Selena's?"
  • I only do what my gut tells me to. I think it's smart to listen to other people's advice, but at the end of the day, you're the only one who can tell you what's right for you.
  • If you focus on the money, you're not going to get anywhere. You can want to be successful, but at the end of the day, if money is your motivation, if that's how shallow your outlook is on life, then you're going to be such an empty person. Because there's nothing driving you from the inside -- there's no passion...
  • My mom always told me that if you work hard, you can achieve anything. And it's true. It's one of the truest things ever.
  • I think crossroads come at many times during your life. Up to this point, I've had several. You get to a certain point in your life and you're like, Am I supposed to be doing this? And it's usually in the face of some failure - something that didn't work out the way you wanted it to. And you're faced with a decision: Do I keep trying to do this or do I give up?
  • Beauty is only skin deep. I think what's really important is finding a balance of mind, body and spirit. Somebody said to me not too long ago, 'Until you're twenty, you have the face you are born with, and after that you have the face you deserve', and I really loved that - the idea that you wear who you are on your face.
  • If you kiss on the first date and it's not right, then there will be no second date. Sometimes it's better to hold out and not kiss for a long time. I am a strong believer in kissing being very intimate, and the minute you kiss, the floodgates open for everything else.
  • I was in third grade when Rapper's Delight changed my life. But, when I came home, my mother would be listening to Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Diana Ross. I want to include all those elements in my music.
  • I didn't expect it to happen like this, wrapping one film and flying out to do a new one the next day. But I'm fresh enough and ambitious enough to stay up all night for the sake of a job. I'm not gonna take it easy. I want to do so much more when I'm getting these great opportunities.
  • I'm trying to get the focus back on what I do as an artist, not what I do at home.
  • It was all a bit mad. For a girl like me, wearing gorgeous clothes and having all this attention was amazing. It was like being a princess. But it didn't take me long to realise that that sort of fame can be scary. The more the circus builds up around you, the more you start to lose all those intentions that get you there in the first place. I was always about being a good performer and working hard, doing movies, making music, but that started to get lost in all that crazy stuff.
  • I throw myself into love because I believe in it, but when things don't work you have to take responsibility. You all know things have gone wrong for me. Everybody has laughed, everybody has had a knock at me. It hurts, it always does. There have been times when I didn't want to be me any more. From the outside looking in, it may have appeared that it was a glamorous exciting life, but I would have swapped places with anybody. It really did start to get to me and the easy thing to do would be to walk away.
  • I'm not J.Lo, she's not a real person. She was just a bit of fun that got really crazy. I've never been anyone but Jennifer. I was going to call the album Call Me Jennifer because that would be my way of saying goodbye to the whole J.Lo thing. But Rebirth is perfect because it means so much more.

Jennifer Lopez twins revealed..

Jennifer Lopez twins revealed:

THE NAME GAME.
Max and Emme will have their father's given last name, Muñiz.

HOW SHE FELT ABOUT HAVING TWINS.
"I was in denial until I went to the doctor and she said, 'Oh my God! There's one baby, see the heart beating? And there's the other one!" she told the magazine. "I knew twins ran in my family, and we always joked, 'Who do you think is going to have the twins?' So, of course, all my sisters were like, 'It's you! It's you!' "

Jennifer Lopez reveals all about her twins, Max and Emme, in the new issue of People, out tomorrow.

ODY OF WORK:

Lopez, who has shed most of the nearly 50 lbs. she gained during pregnancy, says she's not in a hurry to get her old shape back: "Not right now. I even play with my little leftover belly, you know?"

WHY SHE DIDN'T BREAST-FEED.

"My mom didn't breast-feed, and I think that was the thing for me. You read and figure out what's the best thing for them."

WHY THIS IS THE HAPPIEST TIME OF HER LIFE RIGHT NOW.

"Absolutely. Having children is the biggest thing that can happen, I think, to a woman. You win an Oscar, get nominated for a Golden Globe -- you know, whatever things you think are big -- I can't even think of anything that can match the actual miracle of giving birth and having your own child. It's beyond anything you could ever imagine."

WAS IT TOUGH TO CONCEIVE?

"It was natural. We didn't do in vitro, which I know was reported. Everybody assumed that because we had twins. I wanted to have a baby, but I've always said exactly what I said all those years they asked us since we've been married: 'Well, when are you guys gonna have some kids?' 'When it happens naturally, I guess!' And that's when it happened. It was a surprise to us."

WAS SHE WORRIED IT MIGHT NOT HAPPEN?

"You start getting older, you think to yourself, maybe [having kids] is just not meant for me. I knew there was nothing wrong with me. I knew that I could. Deep down, I really wanted it badly." MARC: "It never even entered my mind that it would never happen."

HOW IS MARC ON DIAPER DUTY? "He's the best. He puts the help that we have to shame."

Mother's Day Around the World - History & Genealogy

Celebrate Motherhood this Mother's Day

The hand that rocks the cradle rules the nation and its destiny. --South African proverb

Mother's Day is a holiday celebrated in many countries around the world, but not all nations celebrate on the same day. In the United States, Mother's Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Many other countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia and Belgium also celebrate Mother's Day on the same day as the United States. England, however, celebrates Mother's Day on the fourth Sunday of Lent, and in Argentina it is the second Sunday in October. International Mother's Day is actually celebrated on May 11.

A Brief History of Mother's Day

The earliest celebration honoring mothers dates back to the annual spring festival of ancient Greece dedicated to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.

he Greeks would pay tribute with honey-cakes and fine drinks and flowers at dawn. Much like our current Mother's Day tradition of breakfast in bed! Early Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary. Later, in England, an ecclesiastical order expanded the holiday to include all mothers, and decreed it as Mothering Sunday. Servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers.

When the first English colonists settled in America they didn't really have time for many celebrations. The tradition of Mothering Sunday was discontinued until 1872 when Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910), the author of the lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, organized a day for mothers dedicated to peace.

In 1907, Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948), a Philadelphia schoolteacher, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She wrote hundreds of letters to legislators and prominent businessmen on both state and national levels asking them to create a special day to honor mothers. On May 10, 1908, the third anniversary of the death of Anna's mother, the minister of the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virgina (the church her mother had attended) gave a special Mother's day sermon honoring Mrs. Jarvis' memory. Anna handed out her mother's favorite flower, the white carnation. In 1914, Anna's hard work finally paid off when President Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement proclaiming the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers.

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon's wedding

Rumors of a romance and upcoming wedding became reality on April 30, 2008 for superstar Mariah Carey and actor Nick Cannon. Although the bride offered a clue regarding her impending "I do" when she appeared at an event wearing a platinum engagement ring from Jacob The Jeweler, adorned with a pale pink, emerald-cut 10 carat diamond embraced by 58 vivid pink diamonds which are guarded on either side a crescent-shaped diamond (totaling 17 carats The New York Post reports) - when the couple exchanged vows it was a private affair blessed by the presence of a few close friends, including rapper Da Brat.

Mariah Carey really did get married to Nick Cannon in the Bahamas last week - and they have the tattoos to prove it. The 38-year-old singer and the 27-year-old actor confirmed to People magazine that they tied the knot at Carey's Bahamian estate April 30 after a courtship that began in late March.

In an interview from the magazine's May 19 issue, Cannon said they clicked instantly when Carey cast him as a lover in the video for her new single, "Bye Bye". "From the first time we sat down to discuss the video at the Beverly Hills Hotel, we connected," Cannon said. "We had so much in common spiritually, and we laugh at the same things. I didn't have to put on my Mac Daddy suave mode. I was able to be myself with her. We are both eternally 12 years old."

They began a whirlwind romance, and raised eyebrows when Carey was seen sporting a huge diamond ring on her finger at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her movie "Tennessee", in which she plays a waitress. Carey said she told "only about four people" about the wedding. Were Carey's friends surprised?

"Some were, but some weren't," she said. "One thing (few people) knew was we got tattoos a few weeks earlier. So anyone who saw my (Mrs. Cannon) tattoo wasn't surprised." Chiming in, Cannon said, "To me rings are special and exciting, but tattoos mean more than anything. They're forever and ever. They professed our love."

A dozen guests attended their sunset wedding, where they served Maine lobster and Dom Perignon champagne. The bride wore a gown by Nile Cmylo that showed off her curves and faded from off-white to pale pink.

"My pastor Clarence Keaton flew in from New York," Carey said. "The whole wedding was really beautiful and sweet. Being there with loved ones under the sky... it was a spiritual moment." Cannon said he was speechless watching Carey walk down the aisle: "I was elated, but I was thinking, 'Don't pass out.' (The pastor) said, 'The eyes are the window to the soul,' then gave us an entire minute to stare into each other's eyes. So I was saying, 'Don't cry.'"

The pair said they've thought about having kids. "It's part of the whole purpose of getting married," Carey said. "I'd just want our children to have the best childhood and upbringing they possibly could."

HOW TO HAVE A PERFECT SHAVE

1. Prepare

• Shave while showering or bathing.
• Always use hot water while shaving. Hot water softens the hair, opens pores and relaxes the skin.
• Before shaving, apply The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Oil to protect the skin and soften the hair, especially in delicate areas such as the bikini, under arms, at the ankles and behind the knees or legs.

2. Lather Up!
• Allow a few moments for the hot water to soften the hair, then lather up with shaving brush or fingers.
• Use coconut oil based Shaving Cream for a rich, luxurious lather that provides a close, comfortable shave.
• For best results, use contoured Shaving Brush made of badger hair. It helps generate a warm, protective lather, softens and lifts the hair and exfoliates dead skin cells.

3. Shave
• Always use a sharp, clean blade and a properly balanced handle. Avoid applying too much pressure on your razor, this is often the cause of razor burn and skin irritations. Glide the razor gently over your skin and rinse your blade after every few strokes. Pull the skin straight and taut with one hand, while you shave with the other.

FOR LEGS: • Shave against the direction the hair grows. Place the razor at the base of your ankle and pull gently up the entire length of the leg, in one smooth stroke. To avoid nicks & cuts that often occur behind the ankle, flex your heel to stretch the skin while you shave.

FOR BIKINI AREA & UNDER ARMS: • The skin in these areas is softer and more pliable, and the hair is coarser, making it prone to razor burn and ingrown hairs. Take precaution by first shaving gently with the direction of hair growth, then re-lather and shave lightly against the direction of the growth.
